Whether It’s your first time traveling solo or it’s just an idea – Traveling solo will push you out of your comfort zone. In this blog post, I share some solo travel tips I follow when traveling. My first solo trip was to San Francisco, Although it was in the same country – it was across the country. (I’m from Miami for reference)
A Solo trip is a thrilling adventure that can turn into self-discovery and newfound independence. If you’re contemplating your first solo adventure, there’s always something new to discover when you venture out alone. One thing is for sure safety is the number one priority.
Here are some top safety tips when traveling solo!
Research: From where you’re staying to activities you have planned, research ahead to familiarize yourself with the area. If you’re staying at a hostel check out reviews not only from the hostel’s website but also check out Google reviews or blogs. Company sites tend to mostly show their positive feedback.
Check in with people from back home daily: Either in the morning or in the afternoon it’s always good to keep those updated on your travels. Sharing your itinerary or your location can be helpful.
Keep important documents secure: Keep your passport, extra credit card, or cash in a secure spot. You can keep documents in a safe or your luggage with a luggage lock.
Be aware of your surroundings: Try and stay off your phone, and always be on the lookout. If you think someone might be following you or if something doesn’t feel right enter a nearby business and ask for help.
Carry a portable charger: The last thing you would want to happen in an unknown place is to not be able to contact anyone because your phone died.
Use reliable transportation: Use Uber, taxis, or private companies, don’t accept rides from strangers.
Avoid walking at night: As a tourist who is exploring the area, you don’t want to get lost especially at night where the city might not be as recognizable as it is during the day.
Learn basic phrases in the local language: If you’re traveling to a country that speaks a different language, learn some basic phrases! From Hello, thank you, Where is the bathroom, etc… this can be helpful.
It might seem scary to travel alone but I think it’s something one should try in their lifetime. As you embark on your solo travel journey, remember it’s a unique experience. Embrace the freedom, be open to new connections, and of course prioritize safety.
